  Noel Devine

Have you stopped to think how special Noel Devine’s 56-yard touchdown run to beat Connecticut really was?

The Huskies, playing with incredible emotion, scored on the second longest pass completion against a West Virginia football team ever with less than four minutes remaining in the game. The Mountaineers don’t blink and come right back to score the game winning touchdown. It’s quite a testament to the resiliency of this year’s team — a resiliency they’ll need over the next five games.

***

South Florida coach Jim Leavitt is thinking about personnel changes after his team got rolled 41-14 at Pitt last Saturday. Bulls radio announcer Jim Louk tells me that USF’s two-game skid can be traced back to the loss of quarterback Matt Grothe. Replacement B.J. Daniels has become less effective after teams were able to study him on tape. Daniels was relieved in the second half against Pitt, but is expected to start Friday night against the Mountaineers.

***

Last Saturday’s game was officially homecoming for the Mountaineers. However, this week’s game in Tampa will be a homecoming for several WVU players from Florida. Four of West Virginia’s key offensive players (Noel Devine, Jarrett Brown, Jock Sanders, and Alric Arnett) are all Florida natives. All totaled, there are 24 Florida natives on this year's WVU roster.

***

If you’re going to the game on Friday dress cool. Daytime temperature is predicted to hit 89 degrees with a nighttime low of 70. Fortunately, the Mountaineers are expected to practice in warm weather all week here in Morgantown.

***

If you’re someone that likes to foreshadow the future, keep these numbers and trends in mind during Friday’s game.

  • South Florida is 75-5 all-time when they lead after the second quarter.

  • The Bulls are just 16-45 when trailing at the half.

  • When leading after three quarters the Bulls are 79-5 - that’s a 94 percent winning percentage.

  • When the opposing team commits more turnovers, South Florida is 52-7.

In short, to beat the Bulls it would be wise for the Mountaineers to score early, hold on to the football, and try not to go into overtime. USF is 7-0 all-time in overtime games.

    ***

      Deniz Kilicli

I spoke with Bob Huggins on Monday and received an update on the progress of the four newcomers to this year’s team. The coach gives a thumbs up on all four: Dalton Pepper, Casey Mitchell, Danny Jennings, and Deniz Kilicli. Huggins said Kilicli is the team's best inside scorer. By the way, we’re now told Kilicli is pronounced Ka-LICK-e. At 6-9, 265 pounds, I’m leaning toward calling him the Istan-Bull.

    ***

The Associated Press preseason basketball poll comes out later this week. I asked Huggs where he would rank his team. According to the coach, if the Mountaineers are No. 2 in the Big East coaches' poll, they should probably be ranked in the Top 10 of the AP poll.

    ***

Just to let you know how quickly hoop season will arrive, Syracuse played its first exhibition game on Sunday. The Mountaineers play their first exhibition game in less than two weeks. Mountain State University will visit the Coliseum on Sunday, Nov. 8. Coach Bob Bolen’s Mountain State squad is again predicted to contend for the NAIA national title. Mountain State also boasts the tallest player in college basketball in junior center Paul Sturgess, who is 7-feet-8 inches tall. That’s not a typo - 7-feet-8-inches tall. Here’s looking at you kid.

Where would we be w/o Noel? On second thought, I don't want to think about it. With 3 of our remaining games being played on Friday nights (ESPN), it's time for Noel to shine in the spotlight with 25+ carries a game so he can really tear it up. With no clear Heisman favorite, these 3 big games on the national stage, which will help decide the Big East champ could really help his cause for the trophy. Obviously, the team and wins are what matter most but I think Noel can really make a case for himself as a serious Heisman candiate in these final games.

Over at the smoking musket we've been talking about how the fans can get more into the games. Instead of everyone doing the Lets Gooo..... Mountaineers cheer when the cheerleaders come out into the end zone on TV commercials. We should do it when the other team has the ball or when it is third down. It would be so much more intimidating and very impressive for the television audience. This is something that we could try since trying to get everyone to to the cheer at the same time didn't work.

Ready for a Big East Championship on the hardwood and a deep run into the NCAA tournament this spring. I've been waiting years for this and the pieces are finally falling into place. As for football -it is simple - if we don't turn it over we run the table.

The studen section is made up of "out of staters." I graduated from WVU and I saw first hand how ridiculous fans from NY, NJ, PA, etc. can be. They care more about their buzz than the game. I personally think student tickets should be cut and turn some of them into season tickets. I would kill for season tickets but I cant get them because they are always taken. I would take a students ticket in a heart beat. The loyal fans are the season ticket holder from WV, not the up North Yankee's!

Regarding shawn's comments about out of staters, I am a 62 year old woman from Philly. I have season tickets, and drive 6hrs to the games. I did not even go to WVU. Don"t judge loyal fans by where they live.

    Shawn,

Good call. That is what Huggins said last year. Put your butts in the seats or they are going to be sold. I think it is time for this. Or go by the lottery and see if the student selected to attend, actually attends. If he/she does not, then they do not get selected again. It is a shame I have to pay an extra 100 per seat to keep my seats and then at the games there is ample room for general admission tix in the student section that should be able to walk up and get. Don't tell me it is the economy for the students. They already are there.

Shawn, I don't know how the students from up north are in 2009. But Im a 91 Graduate who lives, and who has always lived in NJ. I'm a season ticket holder, Mac Donor, and 1100 Club Member. This year I haven't missed a game at home or on the road. Infact in the last 4 years I have only missed two games. The games the day after Thanksgiving are hard for me to get to because I own my own business but I've still made it to half of those games the last four years and will make it to this years games. You not being able to get season tickets is bogus. Season Tickets were still available, ESPECIALLY IF YOU MAKE A DONATION.

So yes, the students have been disappointed, but to be specific about whom and where theyre from is nonsense. As is your reason for not have season tickets. Anyway, If your such a great fan I hope to see you down in Tampa Friday. I'm sitting in section 330 row n. My group has seats 11-16 ask for me, I'll be happy to buy a beer for a bigtime WV Fan you claim to be.

Does not matter where they are from as students. I think his point is, the students would rather be drunk then attend. I agree with W. Gwinn. Give out the tix, if they attend, they can go back to the lottery for next home game. If they do not, then they are out the next game. I am sure there are a lot of WVU students that are not getting selected that would have been filling up those seats. It is not fair to them. I think the ad and WVU needs to look at the average attendance to the games by the students at years end and adjust accordingly for next years student allotments. I find it disheartnening that they pay the tution and fees, get selected and do not attend. This does not look good for recruits.

If we want to be big time. Then we need to show that we can fill that stadium to capacity EACH Week. Until then, we are all just pipe dreaming.

    GO EERS

Devine needs national attention now! He is right up there with the top rb's in the nation, and he still aint getting love. I cant wait till WVU wins a football and basketball National Championship and we finally show people who they need to be talking about. And those chips will be coming in soon.

    GO EERS

I am a student from West Virginia, I have not missed a game or left early in my career. There is a lottery in place and points are deduced if you do not attend the game, however there are two flaws in the system. Flaw number 1 is students that attend do not always get credit, because the technology of the system. Flaw number 2 is students are not deduced points for leaving early. Also remember they stick the students in the upper deck from the endzone to the 20 yard line. Happy you come from philly and pay your money, but you are guaranteed a ticket, we pay a lot more and are not guaranteed a ticket. Just don't forget what mountaineer sports are all about.

I miss when coach rod use to scream at guys and bench them for a while when they messed up. Mainly for the fumbles. Coach Stew is nice and seems like a great guy. I see him get mad but he just seems too nice. He reminds me of a fantastic grandfather.

Ya we need to start a campaign, "Stay For Country Roads Students!"

I live in the Hamptons and go to several games a year and a bowl game every other year. WVU is a great university because of the diversity in the student body. Watch one of their commercials. If WVU was mostly or all in state students, it would be Marshall. If the professors, football, basketball, soccer players, etc. are overly represented by out of state students, welcome in your large and loyal student population. When I was a student, tickets were free, and I drank with students from Beckley, Charleston, Cucumber, Dixie, Tyler Mountain, and numerous other hollers...they enjoyed their buzz as well. Celebrate our rich diverse heritage, cheer on great teams and coaches, and save your hostility for the overrated SEC, Big Ten, and Big Twelve.

Well W. Gwinn. This is W. Gwinn. The original poster. I hope you are W. Gwinn. Good explanation. My point is, if you are not going to go, do not put in for tix. I go. Since I was a small child being snuck into the old mountaineer field as a child to now. Yeah you pay for tuition, and fees. Your fees to attend the games to do not equal what I pay for my tix and travel to games. Your money goes for your education. Mine ALREADY did. For years we have been a 2nd half team, for the students to not ever attend or leave is not a respresntation of what WE, the MOUNTAINEER family wants.

You want to play for national championships? Pack the house and pack it tight. It is not being critical, is is trying to wake people up. Recruits pay attention. SO SHOULD WE. We are 6-1 and our students are not coming to games like they should. Support the team, support the staff, or do not put in for the tix. I would rather have students who WANT to be there. Then those who would better set outside and drink. Or WHATEVER. See you at the bowl game.

The administration changed ticketing policies for students because they wanted a less raucous student section- they got exactly what they asked for..... The lack of a full student section has less to do with students of today vs yesterday as it does with the policies to get tickets. No time investment needed to get tickets- just a request online.... Many who want to go and stay don't get tickets and many who couldn't care less do...... They show up, get their ticket scanned, get credit for being there- then leave- but get "loyalty points" which put them ahead of the curve for the next ticket request.... The policy needs to be changed back to either waiting at the Mountainlair to get tickets the Monday before a home game---- if you have to wait in line to get a ticket, only those serious about going will get them..... and when you've invested your time to get the ticket, you will be more likely to stay at the game..... Either that or go back to: show up game day with a student ID and the first 9,000 get in.... Give some motivation to show up early, but, make the process a bit easier..... Also, someone on another board brought up the fact that many students live in areas now where PRT access is not accessible, and there's a greater hassle of trying to get to the stadium and then have to pay for parking, as compared to 5-6 years ago..... Perhaps there could be shuttle busses that run out to those neighborhoods...... In any case, as long as there is a limitation on tickets equal to the number of seats, the student section will NEVER look full- because even if everyone shows up, they try to squeeze down into the lower levels and get the best seats..... We should change it back to standing room only.

Shawn, that's ridiculous to say that season tickets aren't available. The maximum number of season tickets ever sold was in the 30,000 range. I'm a season ticket holder and MAC member and I promise if you want season tickets, you can get them with minimal donation.

You go WVUGRL. Hopefully someone with the ability to change things we read these posts. I like a forum that allows for ideas and not complaints. These are all good ideas.

I so want us to be on top and having a full stadium filled to capacity would be awesome. I just do not understand how in the last couple of years it has been full and this year is seems like it has been difficult.

I couldn't agree more that everyone needs to stick around and sing "Country Roads". I'm a proud WVU alum and grew up in the great state of WV but my career has taken me all over the country (NC, NY, and now TX). I can tell you with much certainty that I would rather be waterboarded than to miss a single snap of WVU football. Unfortunately, I only make it to a couple of games each year and most of that action must be witnessed from afar so I'm very thankful for ESPN and the other cable outlets getting me closer to WV. Would you believe that I'm actually able to watch "Mountaineer Magazine" in Dallas, TX? Let's all just stick together as Mountaineer fans (no matter what your zip code happens to be) and cheer on both the football and basketball teams to Big East championships. ONE WVU. Montani Semper Liberi.

    W. Gwinn I hope you saying your ticket pays for my education was a joke. Your ticket pays for Mountaineer athletics. I am glad we have loyal fans like you that come to every game, but my money pays for education.

Anyone know which WV color - jersey is up for this game against South Florida?
Posted by W Gwinn on 10/28/09 at 9:22 PM
READ AGAIN. The other W. Gwinn. Was saying that ALL of the money, as a student, pays for his tix. I am saying only his FEES, pays for a possible tix. (maybe you were addressing him) do not know. I know my money goes to where it goes. Obviously he does not.

Do not know where you understood that. But let me put it is this way. I live 4.5 hrs drive to MOTOWN. I pay 450.00 per seat x 4. 100 x 2 nights hotel stay x 7. Go to all the bowl games. Live in VT country, wear a WVU shirt EVERY, I MEAN EVERY DAY to work. To me the students should be there in full FORCE. EVERY GAME. Not as they chose. END OF STORY.

It should be the white jersey with yellow/gold pants. I think that might be the only combo they haven't used this year. LOL
